HSO-Models.com is the place to acquire high quality decision support tools for hydro system operation. These tools are fast… and very cost-effective with respect to your operation planning resources. The primary orientation is towards multi-reservoir hydroelectric systems, but model applications can include any hydro systems that have numerically defined costs or returns for project water levels and discharges.

Starting with your historical inflow data and current forecasts for future inflows and system demands, the HSO-Models tools can guide you toward optimal patterns of weekly or daily releases from a system of reservoirs. Then, optimal unit commitment sequences can also be obtained for any hydroelectric generating stations in the system.

The HSO-Models decision support tools are based on two interconnected systems for optimising hydro system operation:

UCom

The Unit Commitment (UCom) system finds the best schedule of hydroelectric unit commitments for a forecasted sequence of station loads and hydraulic conditions. The objective of this best schedule is to minimise water usage and unit startup/shutdown costs while maximising returns from available capacity reserves. Two optimisers are used—one to find the most efficient loading for each feasible set of units, and one to find the best schedule of online units.

DHS models

Daily Hydro System (DHS) models give hydro system planners and operators the ability to model optimal daily or weekly operation and economic benefits with various system loads and inflows. These models calculate expected values of water in each reservoir as the key data to guide the stochastic multi-reservoir co-ordination.

There are two DHS models:

  • The base Variable Price System (VPS) model can include a number of blocks of energy demand in each time period. For example, these blocks could represent import or thermal energy to be displaced by hydro generation, or export markets available for potential sales. The blocks of energy can be designated as Interruptible or Non-interruptible generation occurring during Heavy or Light Load Hours.
  • The optional Fixed Price System (FPS) model operates with fixed prices for Heavy Load Hour and Light Load Hour energy in each time period. This model is identical to the VPS model—except for the energy demand simplification.
